SPARC Symposium 2018: Socio-Sonic

  • City, University of London (map)

This symposium will take a cross-disciplinary approach, digging deeper into sonic sociality. While the social aspects of music-making are well-documented, the sociality of sound is less often discussed in detail. The SPARC Symposium 2018 will bring together practitioners and researchers from a wide variety of musical and non-musical backgrounds for two days of spoken presentations, discussion, installation, film screenings and performances.

Walls on Walls invites us to listen to a number of recordings made for the current, ongoing collaborative audio-visual installation work in the Music Department by Walls On Walls. You will also be invited to respond to these recordings, as this will form an important part of the collaborative process. The new work looks at the past history, current profile and possible futures of the department, taking inspiration from the architecture of the building and the community that circulates in and around it.

Walls On Walls create participative audio-visual installations. These are site-specific works of art on walls, responding to a location with a visual design and composed sound piece. Each installation is conceived, created and authored by local participants, facilitated by artists Laurie Nouchka and Tullis Rennie. https://www.wallsonwalls.co.uk

“A Post-structuralist Fantasy & Freezywater”

Composer Leo Chadburn introduces Peter Greenaway’s fantastical short film, Vertical Features Remake (1978), which parodies and plays with the ideas of structuralist cinema, and his own work for chamber ensemble and speaking voices, Freezywater, which shares some parallel concerns.

The concert will also include new works by postgraduate composers, devised pieces by smaller groups from within CUEE, animated visual scores, conduction and free improvisation.
